What's an MX record?

An MX record (Mail Exchanger record) is a DNS record that tells email services where to deliver emails for a specific domain or website address.

Think of it like a mailing address for your email. When someone sends you an email, the MX record directs it to the right mail server—just like a mailing address guides letters to your home.

For example, if you use Microsoft 365, it checks the recipient’s MX record to know where to deliver the email. Without the correct MX record, emails won’t reach their destination.

How do I set up MX records?

Setting up and managing MX records is usually done through your domain's DNS provider. For domains using GoDaddy nameservers, your DNS is managed through your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio.
