Tips to make your homepage blossom in autumn

Whether you’re ready for it or not, autumn is finally here.

I say “finally” because I personally think this is the most beautiful season in Canada. As the weather, clothes and colours of trees begin to change, it’s also a great time to refresh the ambience and content of your business’s website. I’ve put together some tips and tricks to inspire beneficial changes to your homepage. Read on to learn more.

How your homepage can adapt to the weather

Just as the Earth inspires art, it also inspires change. If those changes include everyday life, such as pumpkin spices for your latte or “earthy” colours in your choice of clothing, then it should also inspire your business. The idea here is that your business should adapt to become a part of everyday life for nearby consumers (and the rest of Canada). Convinced yet? I hope so. Because now I’ll give you some tips on how to refresh your business’s homepage to keep it up to date, and your customers up to speed.

Low-maintenance tips and tricks

If you’re like me, anytime you hear “maintenance,” you associate that with “work.” Well, just because you’re working to update the homepage of your website doesn’t mean that it has to be difficult. And, updating your site can actually be as beneficial as it is easy, because it lets your viewers know that all of the information they’re reading is current. This is huge. Need some ideas? Here are a few:

  • Reword your wording.
Play with some catchy new headlines or calls to action. The more fun you have writing them, the more enjoyable they’ll be for the viewers.
  • Put special offers in the spotlight.
Whether you’ve started a new service, seasonal menu, or begun promoting new products, let your potential and current customers know the details.
  • Rearrange the hierarchy of your homepage.

This is a great way to emphasize different aspects of your business.

By keeping the content and images consistent with the season, you’re immediately letting your viewers know that all the information on your site is up to date.

How to keep your content current

If you’re creating a social post, you can always feature that on the front of your site. This also lets your viewers know just how current the information is. These posts should be inspired by autumn. Here are a few tips on what to feature and how to get started:

  • Promotions
Seasonal promotions are nothing new, but be sure to participate. If you’re a coffee shop owner, feature your pumpkin spices. If you own a landscaping business, offer discounts for your customers’ “last lawn maintenance of the season.” If you own a clothing store, feature your flannels or other in-style attire on the front page of your website
  • Giveaways
Everyone loves something that’s free. Encourage your viewers to provide their email address for a chance to win something awesome from your store. Tell them the first fifty customers to come through the door this weekend will get a free gift. Or, you could have candy in your store all month, so if any of your customers’ have kids, they’re welcome to take some. Again, you get the idea.
  • Imagery
As you feature your seasonal products and promotions, make sure your photographs have a theme that’s consistent. If you have Halloween or autumn décor in your store, keep those decorations in the background of your social posts, which you should also be featuring on your homepage. Remember, festive is always fun.

Promotional tip — if possible, get involved in your local community’s Oktoberfest. By setting up a booth and chatting with locals, you’re making your presence known. Have business cards with your website information on hand and ready to hand off.
