GoDaddy interview with Ayesha Curry: Family + food
This interview has been gently edited for clarity.
GoDaddy: Have you ever felt like you didn’t fit into this world?
Ayesha Curry: I would say for me, when I was growing up, I always felt like I didn't fit in, especially during my high school years. I was moving from a different country. I'm Canadian, so I was moving from Canada to North Carolina. Moving from the great north to the dirty south was a big transition — and I definitely felt like I didn't fit in. But I loved the people, I loved the culture … and I wanted it to fit in. Slowly they embraced me, and it became a normal thing. I was just a Canadian girl in a southern world.
GoDaddy: What kind of world do you want to live in?
Ayesha Curry: The kind of world I'd like to live in is a world where there's no war — there's peace. A world where people can do what GoDaddy is saying, “make the world you want.” Your environment can be what you want it to be — a happy place, a peaceful place, a place where you can succeed.
GoDaddy: What kind of world do you want for families?
Ayesha Curry: I would love a world where people communicate a little bit better, where they take the time to challenge each other, and speak with each other, and learn a little bit about each other. Not always worrying so much about yourself, but where you're trying to uplift your community and your family and one another, to make each other better.
GoDaddy: How are you making the world you want?
Ayesha Curry: I feel like I'm making the world I want by making sure that families understand the importance of how food brings people together.
It's a love language.
It can open the doors for so many things — from communication to building relationships. Food is setting the foundation for all of those things. It really is like a vessel for all things family.
GoDaddy: Why is this so important to you?
Ayesha Curry: Bringing families together is so important to me.
I feel like with millennials, nowadays, we're forgetting the basic fundamentals — family, tradition and relationships. Food has been my avenue to kind of keep that alive, to keep that spark.
I have three small children myself, and I want to make sure that I'm instilling a foundation of good morals and values, and family and togetherness. So this is all a part of that.
GoDaddy: What made you realize that we needed to connect families and revive traditions?
Ayesha Curry: I realized that we needed to revive modern traditions and get families to connect more when I started having a family of my own. I realized how much we were on our devices, how much time we were spending working and getting into the thick of life — the hustle and bustle, the chaos of how busy people's lives are today.
I realized we needed to take a minute to reconnect and get together and communicate — and the perfect place to do that was at the family table and in the kitchen.
We need to get back to the basics. … I think people just have lost a sense of family and we need to find that togetherness.
GoDaddy: What roadblocks have your encountered?
Ayesha Curry: I feel like the roadblock that’s gotten in the way for me is the fact that there's only 24 hours in a day. There's never enough time to do everything that there is to accomplish.
For me it's been about looking at the small things that go right during the day and taking those as big wins.
That helped me turn the negatives into a positive.
GoDaddy: How does it feel to be a part of our #maketheworldyouwant campaign?
Ayesha Curry: Being a part of this GoDaddy campaign has made me feel super empowered, like a real mom boss. I love that it's giving me that extra little jumpstart I need to just keep going and keep pressing forward. It's really ignited a new fire in me to keep sending my message across about getting families at the table, talking and communicating.
So to be able to have yet another platform to be able to spread that message, I think it's so special … like chicken soup.
I have a long history with GoDaddy. My parents host many of their websites via GoDaddy. So I knew it was a brand that my family trusted. My site is now hosted on GoDaddy as well. They're empowering people like me, people like my siblings and my parents to really make the world they want — and letting everybody know that the possibilities are really endless.
You don't have to have a huge following to make the world you want. … It's very easy to get your message across by having a simple website and a domain. It opens the doors for so much.
GoDaddy: What other makers inspire you?
Ayesha Curry: I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and I think seeing my parents, especially my mom, build her business from the ground up. That bug was instilled in me from such a young age.
There was no way I wasn't going to become an entrepreneur myself.
I'm so glad she gave me the tools and set the example and the tone for me growing up.
GoDaddy: What advice would you give people out there with a dream?
Ayesha Curry: For everyone out there with a dream, who hasn't pursued it, I would say you don't know until you try. You're always going to be fearful.
That fear is actually a good thing. It keeps you going. It keeps you motivated.
Nobody wants to fail— and when you have a little bit of fear in you, it gives you that adrenaline rush you need to succeed.
Don't be afraid to try. There are so many tools, like GoDaddy, that can help you along the way to set you up for success.
