We’re excited to share with you our re-architected Managed WordPress platform, reimagined from the ground up to deliver the benefits of a VPS with the ease and efficiency of Managed WordPress – launching for new Managed WordPress customers in the US starting in December 2024.
Serving over 80 billion requests per month with over 3 petabytes of data, the GoDaddy Managed WordPress platform is designed to handle the unpredictability of traffic spikes with advanced security and isolation at every level, delivering up to 2x faster performance than other WordPress hosting providers.*
Here’s an inside look at what makes the new platform tick.
Performance and scalability: Flexible enough to handle anything
Website traffic is anything but predictable, and a WordPress hosting platform must be ready to handle sudden spikes. With burstability built into our infrastructure, your WordPress sites can scale vertically on demand, using additional CPU cores as needed, ensuring they perform, even during peak loads. Key performance features:
- Global enterprise-grade CDN, powered by Cloudflare: Static assets are served from the edge, enhancing load times while blocking malicious traffic at the perimeter.
- Fast object cache, powered by Object Cache Pro: Helps improve site performance by storing database query results in memory, significantly reducing load times and server strain for faster, more scalable sites.
- Enterprise-grade HTTP gateway: We prioritize legitimate traffic and block bots and crawlers, using full-page caching to serve visitors with minimal delays.
- Optimized PHP runtime: Processes only what the CDN or cache can’t, ensuring fast delivery of dynamic content.
With up to 12-core burst capabilities, your site has access to CPU power that ensures high concurrency for traffic surges. Using usage data, we intelligently place sites in environments with room to grow, so your site always has the resources it needs.
Advanced isolation: Stronger protection at every layer
We’ve reimagined our Managed WordPress hosting architecture with strong isolation - offering the power of a VPS without compromising ease of use.
You can now leverage slices of high-performance servers without worrying about noisy neighbors or resource contention. Each component in the stack is isolated to help prevent vulnerabilities in one service from spreading to others.
Technologies enabling isolation:
- Docker containers: Every service and component is containerized for stronger security.
- Linux kernel cgroup policies: Control how resources are allocated, ensuring your workloads get dedicated access.
- Container orchestration with Nomad: If an instance gets overloaded, tasks can be rescheduled to other resources.
Nano segmentation: Precision network security for every site.
Traditional server-level network controls weren’t enough for our new Managed WordPress platform.
This allows us to create individual networks for each WordPress site, ensuring your site communicates only with the resources it needs - nothing more, nothing less.
Containment: Multi-layer security that anticipates the worst
In security, assumptions are dangerous - so we designed our platform around the expectation that something will go wrong. The result is a multi-layer security model that helps keeps your WordPress site secure.
Key security measures:
- Hardened containers: Only the necessary packages are installed for each service, minimizing attack surfaces.
- Immutable code: Core WordPress components and GoDaddy-managed plugins are immutable, helping to prevent tampering.
- SELinux policies: Even if an exploit occurs, secondary controls restrict further actions, helping to prevent cascading attacks.
Together, Isolation, Nano Segmentation, and Containment create a system where security threats can be limited in scope, reducing the risk of widespread impact.
Observability: Actionable insights to improve performance and security
We’re enhancing observability across the platform to ensure optimal performance and proactive problem-solving. In Q4, we’re rolling out advanced metrics and logs to support our operations teams.
In the first half of 2025, we plan to extend these insights to our customers. With access to per-site metrics via the dashboard, our customers will gain the visibility they need to optimize their WordPress sites.
We’re also exploring APM (Application Performance Monitoring) integration, offering two potential paths:
- “Bring Your Own License” for tools like NewRelic.
- OpenTelemetry-based tracing as a low-cost option.
Why this platform matters for WordPress developers
Our new Managed WordPress platform offers you the best of both worlds - the power and control of a VPS combined with the simplicity and reliability of Managed WordPress.
You get:
- Seamless scaling: Handle traffic surges with vertical scaling up to 16 cores.
- Strong isolation: Help protect your site with containerized services and nano-segmentation.
- Multi-layer security: Stay ahead of threats with hardened containers and immutable code.
- Real-time observability: Monitor site health and performance through upcoming per-site dashboards.
We’ve built this platform with one goal: to give our customers the tools they need to build, scale, and secure WordPress sites without compromise.
