WordPress fans turn out for Kansas City WordCamp

If you mix the elegance of Spain, smooth jazz, incredible BBQ, and go-getters with a penchant for WordPress®, you’ll end up with an awesome WordCamp in Kansas City … guaranteed. Beginning with “Foundation Friday,” WordCamp Kansas City was a nonstop weekend of networking, learning, and exploring everything Country Club Plaza and downtown Kansas City has to offer.

WordCamper extraordinaire Marc Benzakein of ServerPress wrapped up talks on Friday with his presentation, “How to Rock a WordCamp Even if You’re a Total n00b.” He had the room in stitches. My favorite piece of advice was Marc’s Step No. 1: Skip a session or two in order to get some good quality networking done.

There’s so much great information being shared at WordCamps, sometimes skipping a session can lead to meeting someone you can help or be helped by.

Saturday was packed with talks on everything from starting and setting up your WordPress site to developing custom plugins. I was so inspired by Pippin’s plugins presentation, during which he walked through the process of creating a plugin in real-time, that I created this little pretty.

Finally, Michael Calvert helped to wrap things up on Saturday afternoon with a talk about the Disqus comment system and how implementing the Disqus plugin can help to cut down on comment spam.

If there’s a WordCamp in your area, take the weekend and give it a shot. If you’re new to WordPress, make sure and sign up for the Friday events. You can visit WordCamp Central to find a WordCamp near you, and view photos from my experience at WordCamp Kansas City 2014 on my website.
