When I grow up I want to be..? Why it’s never too late to pursue your passion

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Perhaps you wanted to be a musician? An artist? Or a photographer? Maybe you were allured by the independence of the business person or the other worldliness of the astronaut?

When we were little, the dreams we had were so big. They were unfettered. They came at a time before life got in the way. It was an age of innocence. A time when anything seemed possible.

What if we were to tell you though, that times haven’t changed. That the desire infused in the younger you still exists. And not only can it be explored, it can be acted upon. In fact, there’s a group of people already doing so. And these people are called side hustlers.

You’ll know if you’re one. Need confirmation? Then ask yourself these simple questions:

  • Are you in a full-time job?
  • Do you have a sense of unfulfilled potential?
  • Do you have a sense that you could do this yourself?

If you answered “yes” or “tell me about it” to one or more of the above, then you’re a side hustler in waiting. So what exactly is a side hustler?

Side hustle: your passion is what you were born to do

Side hustle: your passion is what you were born to do

A side hustler stands tall as an individual who holds a main job as an employee and a second as self-employed. They’ve walked the journey a million times in their mind. They know exactly where they’re destined to go.

Alongside their 9-5, they run a Side Hustle. A business. They turn their passion into profit. This is a unique and ever-growing community of individuals. The UK, in fact, is bustling with dreamers, makers, movers and shakers. Have you checked out our new research which reveals the number of side hustlers in the UK has risen by 32% in the last decade?

It’s a community of individuals. Each with their own idea. Each with their own motivation. They are joined together by that little voice. The one that says do what you love. The irrepressible itch that just needs scratching.

Best of all? It doesn’t matter if you’re 25, 35, 55 or 65 — it’s NEVER too late to change your priorities. For the side hustler, age is but a number.

Is it too late for a bit on the side?

No, is the simple answer. Despite what they tell you, it’s never too late to be who you want to be. To have the life you want. The life you deserve. This is the beauty of the Side Hustle.

1. Security in salary

You already have a 9-5. Against the security of a salary, now’s the time to explore the viability of your side business idea. Do so in the mornings, in the evenings, in the cracks of opportunity which break through every day. Yes, this requires commitment. And yes, you’ll be tired. But think about the rewards. Think about the younger you and those desires which refused to go away.

2. Time to try new things

There’s no rush. Good things don’t always happen overnight. As you have a day job, you have the time to slowly roll out your Side Hustle. Is there market interest? Is your passion generating profit? If so, is it enough to self-sustain? The aim is to hit that sweet spot where you no longer need a salary. This brings with it the opportunity to take a calculated risk and go full Side Hustle.

3. Don’t put things off

It’s human nature to put things off until tomorrow. We all do it. Take your day job. Perhaps you’ve invested so much time in it that you’re perpetually putting off the decision to make the change. You haven’t wasted time, though. All roads have led to this very moment. The path you’ve taken has made you who you are, the person considering stepping into the Side Hustle shoes. So why shouldn’t you try a bit on the side?

How do I start a Side Hustle?

Once you’ve realised it’s never too late to start a Side Hustle, get a plan in place. Do what you have to do to ensure it’s not a flash in the pan. This is going to take focus, but it will be worth it! Kick things off by:

  • Figuring out what you want to do
  • Make a plan - a schedule, what you’ll need such as a brand, a website, when you’re going to do it
